Mobile App Development Statistics and Trends and the Way Forward

Tunes App Store will be eight years old this year and the new technologies that are being brought in such as Swift 3.0, iOS 10, WatchOS 3.0 and HomeKit to name a few mark exciting opportunities for iPhone app development companies across India. Of course, for many app developers across the country, it hasn’t exactly been smooth-sailing; the focus on novelty has now shifted to innovation and long-term viability.

Vital App Developer Stats

Globally, there are 8.7m mobile app developers and Asia is home to 760,000 app developers and leading the pack. The highest average iOS app developer rate is US$150 for developers from North America and the lowest is US$30 for developers from India. For Android app developers, the highest hourly rate is at US$ 150 in North America and lowest is US$26 for a developer from India. (Source: Developer Economics Q1, 2014)

App Store Stats

Statista’s data for App Store download between years July, 2008 and June, 2016 shows that the number of apps has consistently increased in the store and as of June, 2015, the number reached 1.5 million, 10 times higher than in early 2010. As of May, 2015, the number of applications submitted for release on App Store was over 54,000. However, it was also found that 25% of the apps downloaded worldwide were used only once during the first 6 months of their ownership. As of June, 2016, Apple announced that 160 billion apps had been downloaded from the App Store.

Between December, 2009 and February, 2016 the number of apps available in Google Play Store surpassed 2 million apps. It was found that as of November, 2013, 98% revenue was generated through the free apps and in-app purchases while only 1% revenue was generated from paid apps on the Google Play Store.

Games remain the most popular category on both platforms. Overall, in June, 2016, while Android had 2.2 million apps, iOS had 2 million apps.

Some Key Revenue Stats

Mobile apps generate revenue through an app usage, in-app purchases, and in-app advertising. Another way of generating app revenue is by making key features paid while app is available free for download. Apple charges US$ 1.02 per app on an average while 68.8% of the apps on Google Play Store are free apps.  In 2015, Google Play had generated revenue of around US$6 billion.

The Way Forward

The downside of the growth of the mobile app market is that it is difficult for applications to gain visibility. App marketing and leveraging IoT technologies will determine the adoption rates. Smart Home, Industrial and Retail will witness highest adoption rate among app developers and Wearable compatibility will be of essence. Google and Apple have recognized this and are investing heavily on R&D in these segments.
